What do you need – a New Zealand Visitor Visa or an NZeTA?

INZ offers the visitor visa and also has the option of NZeTA (New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority). The question is which one do you need to get?
If you belong to a country on the visa waiver list, NZeTA is what you must get. Just like New Zealand tourist visa requirements, the NZeTA also has specific conditions that you will need to meet.
If you fall under one of these brackets, you will need to get a New Zealand visitor visa:
  • You do not belong to a country on the visa waiver list
  • You are contemplating spending a long time in New Zealand (6 months for visitors from the UK and 3 months for others)
Specific conditions may require you to get the visitor visa NZ provides, even if you are eligible for the NZeTA. Some examples are:
  • You have spent time in prison – INZ may need a character waiver from you.
  • You are suffering from severe medical issues
  • You have been associated with acts of crime or terrorism – you will not be able to get a New Zealand visitor visa unless you get a Special Direction
  • You have been deported from some country in the past
You need to get either the visitor visa NZ provides or an NZeTA, not both.

How much time can you spend in the country on the visitor visa NZ provides?

INZ allows you to stay in the country on a New Zealand visitor visa for a maximum of 9 to 18 months. If you have not spent more than 12 months in the last 24 months in the country, you may be eligible for an additional 3 months if you fall in one of these categories:
  • You have not been able to finish your travel plan and need more time
  • You are unable to leave the country due to unavoidable circumstances
  • This is your first time applying for residence
You must stay outside New Zealand for 1 year if you have recently spent 12 months in the country.
For you to be eligible for the 3-month extension, you must not have studied, worked, or obtained any sponsorship (you must have met your expenses by yourself) while you were in New Zealand.

In order for you to go to some other country from New Zealand, you must satisfy one of these conditions:
  • You must have the authorization to visit that country, and you must produce a sponsor who is going to pay for the ticket, or
  • You must have a ticket to travel to that country and show proper documents that will allow you entry there
